about

All original music was written by Roscoe Mitchell, except track 2 (by Malachi Favors)

If maybe for a second you thought that Black Flag tribute, epic track in Kobaïan language, songs with sitars and female vocals or covers of classical rhythm and blues tunes is all we could surprise you with - you were wrong. This time we want to dig into some deep stuff. And I mean REALLY DEEP STUFF!
During this spring tour with The Legendary Flower Punk I started thinking about a new unusual tribute record. A sequel to Greg Grinn-dedicated album, so to speak. Right around that time I was revisiting the discography of The Art Ensemble of Chicago. I remembered of Roscoe Mitchell’s (a member of TAEoC) LP that I heard about 5 years ago. On that CD Roscoe plays so-called solo saxophone concerts. And when I say solo, I mean completely alone without any other instruments involved in the arrangements. In the 70s this guy was just going out on stage and melting crowds on his own. As far as I know he was one of the first musicians to do so back then. Without any support, any loopers or delay pedals this dude was making excellent music using only his alto, tenor and baritone saxophones! Throwing himself into the raging sea of experimental jazz right in front of the amazed audience.
So I decided to record a tribute CD in celebration of Roscoe’s talent and bravery. This idea came to me so clearly that we started recording as soon as we came back from the aforementioned tour. I chose a track for each member of our The Grand Astoria "family" and the work began. Our first creative task was to find a memorable rhythmic or melodic part and try to recreate it with an instrument of our choice. Then each of us jammed inspired by the original improvisation, track name or just the vibe of the song. The result is not a cover album per se. More like a respectful nod, similar to what we did with Black Flag and the Process of Weeding Out. Some of you may not understand what the hell is this record about and why did we decide to make it in the first place. We did it for ourselves and Roscoe Mitchell. BTW it’s his birthday today. Long live the master!

The Art Ensemble of Chicago.
